Architectural Projection

Noumea Christmas Projections

Noumea 2008

Client: Province Sud

Not far from our eastern shores lies the French island group of New Caledonia. The provincial government in Noumea asked The Electric Canvas for suggestions for a cultural Christmas event incorporating projection. Our recommendation was to produce a Son-et-Lumiere (sound and light show) on the historic cathedral that sits overlooking the city. The storyline had to appeal to all ages and therefore incorporated several musical and visual styles. Of course Santa (Père Noël) made an appearance sweeping across the facade on his journey from the North Pole to the tropics.

Four PIGI projectors were used to cover the facade, the bell towers and the steps from the street below and various effects were added to enhance the architectural treatments motivated by the soundtrack. The fifteen minute presentation was repeated continuously for each of ten nights over Christmas and the public response exceeded all expectations.
